Apple’s Safari to get extension API?

Today Google released a new stable version of Chrome for Mac, Windows and Linux. In the past year Google’s Chrome usage has increased from 2% to 6.7% while Apple’s Safari witnessed minor increase of 0.63% (from 4.07% to 4.70%)

Chrome is certainly great in performance but also allows users to install browser extensions which Safari currently lacks.

Daring Fireball today hinted that Apple might be planning to allow browser extensions on Safari and could announce this during WWDC 2010.

The other big thing that’s missing (compared to both Chrome and Firefox) is a proper extension API. If only Apple had an imminent developer conference where they could unveil such a thing.

Recently an Irish iPhone developer published his thoughts on Flash on Froyo and iPhone Safari Plug-In SDK which is definitely worth reading. He also posted a concept video of ‘Lights Off’ running as an iPad Safari plug-in
